Description

Product Overview

Spirax Sarco DP143 pilot diaphragms are genuine replacement pressure-sensing components engineered for pilot-operated pressure reducing valves. Positioned directly between the pressure adjustment spring housing and the pilot valve chamber, these discs respond to downstream pressure feedback transmitted via the internal sensing passage or external balance pipe. Downstream pressure variations deflect the diaphragms against the calibrated control spring, translating minute pressure fluctuations into mechanical displacement of the pilot plunger to modulate the main valve.

Each diaphragm set is manufactured from BS 1449 316 S31 stainless steel and supplied strictly as a matched pair (2 off). The dual-disc configuration delivers the required spring rate and flexural endurance under constant thermodynamic cycling. Across the entire Spirax Sarco pilot-operated regulator line, the pilot diaphragm dimensions remain identical from DN15LC up to DN80, allowing unified spare stocking across diverse pipe sizes.

Key Features

  • BS 1449 316 S31 Stainless Steel: Austenitic stainless steel metallurgy withstands continuous exposure to saturated steam, condensate washing, and inert gases.
  • Matched Pair Packaging: Always supplied and installed as a set of two diaphragms to achieve correct mechanical stiffness, stroke calibration, and operational fatigue resistance.
  • Universal Size Compatibility: Identical part dimensions serve the entire range of host valve sizes from DN15LC up to DN80 in DP143 and DP163 families.
  • Standard Overhaul Integration: Designated as Item B in manufacturer spare breakdowns and included in the core preventative maintenance kit (*) for 12 to 18-month servicing schedules.

Applications

  • Steam pressure reducing stations operating with Spirax Sarco DP143, DP143H, DP163, and DP163Y valves.
  • Compressed air and non-hazardous industrial gas systems using soft-seated DP143G and DP163G regulators.
  • Superheated steam mains requiring DP143H valves up to 350 °C operating temperature limits.
  • Low-pressure autoclave and sterilizer control circuits using DP143Y or DP163Y units fitted with yellow adjustment springs.

Installation and Replacement

Renewal of the pilot valve diaphragms can be performed with the host valve body remaining inline, provided the steam supply is safely isolated and vented. Follow this step-by-step sequence:

  1. Isolate the reducing valve and vent all internal upstream and downstream line pressure to zero.
  2. Slacken lock-nut (2) and rotate adjustment screw (1) anticlockwise until the control spring is completely relaxed.
  3. Slide out ‘C’ washer (3) from beneath the lock-nut and remove spring housing cover (12 / 4).
  4. Remove control spring (6) and top spring plate (5).
  5. Undo the 4 x M10 nuts (8 / 9), then remove spring housing (4 / 8), bottom spring plate (7), and the two old diaphragms (9 / 10).
  6. Clean all seating and contact faces thoroughly. If original diaphragms are re-used during inspection rather than renewed, refit them in the identical orientation without turning them over.
  7. Place two new BS 1449 316 S31 diaphragms into the housing recess, ensuring clean mating faces.
  8. Verify pilot plunger clearance: when checked with a straight edge placed across the diaphragm location recess, the plunger must maintain a 0.7 mm gap to ensure clearance in neutral position.
  9. Reposition bottom spring plate (7) and spring housing, securing the 4 x M10 nuts (8 / 9) evenly to a torque of 50 N m.
  10. Reinstall spring (6), top spring plate (5), cover (12 / 4), and ‘C’ washer (3). Re-commission the valve according to Section 4.1 startup procedures.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

  • Downstream Pressure Above Setpoint: Fractured pilot valve diaphragms allow pressure sensing failure, preventing the pilot valve from throttling closed. Inspect diaphragms immediately and replace with a new pair if cracked or creased.
  • Pressure Hunting or Erratic Regulation: Overstretched or warped diaphragms lose linearity and cause severe delivery pressure hunting under variable steam loads. Replace both diaphragms during routine servicing.
  • Routine Overhaul: Manufacturer guidelines recommend opening the pilot chamber every 12 to 18 months to examine diaphragms for surface corrosion, fatigue cracking, or pitting.
